Depression in Australia is on the rise and in 1998 it was the fourth most common problem managed by GP's. We are living in a fast changing world and many people find it is difficult to deal with setbacks or changes in life circumstances. This can result in one or many of our basic needs not being met.
The emotional arousal resulting from setbacks or change in life circumstances puts increasing pressure on getting good quality sleep with the result we wake exhausted and unable to focus attention. The effect is lack of motivation to take the actions that help us to function well in our daily life. This in turn leads to more emotional stress and worry. When this is happening it is easy to get caught up in a cycle of depression.
