If You’re Thinking Of Suicide…

Please take the time to read this.

 
I assume that if you’re thinking about suicide, you’re feeling pretty bad at the moment. I’m hoping that if you’re reading this you’re feeling a tiny bit unsure, someplace deep inside, about if you really want to end your life. This is normal even in the deepest of despair, being unsure about dying is okay. At this very moment you are still alive. 
 
Suicidal thoughts happen when your pain exceeds your ability to cope with the pain. It means that even though you want to die, you still want to live.
 
Suicide is neither right nor wrong; it’s morally neutral. It’s just that at the moment your coping resources are not adequate to cope with the pain you’re currently feeling. You do have the ability to overcome suicidal feelings by either increasing your ability to cope or to use strategies to reduce your pain. You can overcome these feelings and thoughts if you choose.
 

Some Coping Strategies:

  • Know that other people get through their pain and manage to live a meaningful life.
  • Make an agreement with yourself that you will not act immediately on your thoughts.  Give yourself some time; say 24 hours, or one week.  There's a great difference between feelings and actions - just because you feel like killing yourself, doesn't mean you have to do it right now.
  • Most people consider suicide because they want to end the pain not because they want to end their life.
  • It's okay to ask for help, we all need to do this sometimes.
  • There are people out there who can help you build up your coping resources or help you deal more effectively with your pain.

  • Phone Lifeline 13 11 14 here in Australia 24 hours a day, 7 days a week or a crisis service in your country.
  • Phone Australia's emergency hotline Number: 000 if you need police or ambulance.
  • Phone Mensline: 1300 79 99 78.  You can phone this number 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Contact your doctor (GP or psychiatrist).
  • Contact the Psychiatric Team at your nearest hospital.
  • Contact a good friend, or a minister, someone who is likely to listen.
  • If you are anywhere in the world you can use this website to find a suicide hotline in your country.

You need to know that suicidal thoughts will pass.
